Recycling
Please Click Here to see what Madison County Solid Waste can Recycle. Please sort accordingly. Thank you.
North Carolina regulations require each county to recycle. The State has also established a goal with incentives to reduce the amount of waste being landfilled. Madison County has benefited from the incentives by receiving recycling grants and has been favorably acknowledged by the State for its recycling program. All material collected for recycling will be marketed. In order to do that, certain quality standards must be met.

Items must be clean, free of bags, trash, and other contaminants and sorted properly. Please DO NOT put plastic bags in any recycling container. Plastic bags are NOT recyclable.
Please remember our Penny-A-Pound program, which allows residents to help the local school system simply by recycling their mixed paper and corrugated cardboard. Madison County Solid Waste donates one penny to the schools for every pound of mixed paper and cardboard recycled in the county at the convenience centers and the landfill.
Recycling is important to Madison County. It creates jobs, saves tax dollars, benefits the local schools, and it is good for the environment, so get involved today.
All locations accept:
  • Aluminum and Steel Cans
  • Corrugated Cardboard
  • Glass (clear, amber, green)

Composting
Organic and food wastes make up a large chunk of our waste stream and one way to decrease this is composting. A simple definition of composting is to "turn waste materials into valuable commodities through some process." With composting you can turn left over kitchen scraps, leaves, grass, etc. into a natural fertilizer to use in your garden. By composting we are taking yet another step to reduce the amount of waste we generate in Madison County. For more information on starting a backyard composting program email Rebecca Shook or call (828) 649-2311.
